Monday, 8:12 AM:

Meet Melvin Roberts. Mel is retired now, but for over 32 years he worked as a Civil Service employee of the U.S. Army. Mel started as a computer programmer, and as his career progressed he was later a systems analyst, and finally an Information Systems Manager. After he retired from Civil Service, he worked for several more years as a contractor for the same and several other projects.

After he retired for good, he began to do the thing he had always wanted to do -- which was to conceive and develop ideas for new and innovative products -- literally to become an inventor. He has been developing new ideas for several years now, and has received 2 patents so far.

What does this have to do with degaussers? Well, as You read this entire report, You will be surprised to find out...

Mel was aware that, in recent years, hundreds of millions of magnetic media items have been used by individuals and businesses for recording data. When the time comes to dispose of these tapes and disks, how do You degauss the media and erase the data, so that it does not get into the wrong hands and lead to identity theft or some other unwanted situation?

He considered that millions of VHS tapes, audio tapes, data tapes, camcorder tapes, floppy disks, and Zip disks exist that contain obsolete personal, privacy, medical, and financial information. To dispose of the data safely, you need to erase them completely so that the data cannot be accessed in any way. How can You solve this problem efficiently, effectively, and quickly?

At that time, Mel owned and had used a hand-held degausser for this purpose. It was frustrating, however, to try to clear media with it. The drawbacks were not good -- since it used electro-magnets, it had to be plugged in; it got hot very quickly, and had to have more downtime than uptime so that it could cool and not burn up the device; and it didn't turn out to be very efficient in clearing the media -- it tended to leave some data on the media unless it was used for an extended period of time -- which meant several periods of cooling time. Mel decided that there had to be a better way!

And just what was that "better way"?

Looking for an answer to this question, Mel researched information on magnets. He found that there was an emerging technology related to "rare-earth" magnets. These magnets were incredibly strong, and could create a very strong field of magnetic flux. They were not electro-magnets, so they didn't get hot. Since they didn't get hot, they had no downtime for cooling. And they used no electricity -- no cost to operate, and definitely a "Green" alternative to the existing technology.

Are You are beginning to get the picture?

Only one problem remained -- how to contain the flux field so that it was concentrated on the electronically-recorded media -- in order to work effectively and efficiently, and also to prevent any media that got close to the device from being damaged.

The answer to this problem was structural steel. Placing the magnets inside the ring of steel concentrated the magnetic field, and also kept the field from extending outside of the steel to the extent that it would damage media close by.

The only thing left to do was to put this combination of magnets and steel in a casing -- and plastic injection-molding put the final piece of the puzzle in place.

What was the result of all of this work?

Erase-O-Matic!

"Amazing product. We used to use the hand held degaussers that would only last for about a minute before they burst into smoke. This product can be used continuously and without electricity which was huge for us as we practice "green" methods whenever possible. I've also noticed less digitization than before. I have recommended this product to our other sites and would recommend to anyone."

Jason; Hawaii
Media used: mini dv

"It did exactly what I wanted it to do, and WAY better than my old hand-held machine...that one could only be run for a minute and then needed to be shut off for 30 minutes....totally a waste of my time. This one, I could do all the tape erasures I needed to within a 15 minute time span -- great!"

S. Sweeton; Randolph, MA
Media used: Mini DV-R tapes

The Erase-O-Matic is the child of thinking outside the box -- or, maybe, what should be IN the box! The new rare-earth magnet technology has made the Erase-O-Matic possible. The Erase-O-Matic:

  • Uses NO electricity;

  • Is silent, portable, and needs no cooling time

  • Has NO switches, controls, adjustments, or moving parts;

  • Needs NO maintenance;

  • Needs NO special operating, handling, or processing skills;

  • ...and is, in the words of one customer,:

"Easy to use, no batteries, electricity or software required. Failsafe."

Sharon; California
Media used: cassette tapes

By using state-of-the-art Rare-Earth Magnets instead of electro-magnets to erase any magnetically-recorded media, the Erase-O-Matic eliminates the need for power, switches, or moving parts. When you pass your media through the device, it encounters a magnetic field that can be measured at as much as 5500 Gauss.

5500 Gauss!

You will be amazed at how many types of media can be cleared with Erase-O-Matic. The magnets used in the Erase-O-Matic are incredibly powerful, as you will see.

Erase-O-Matic is a degausser that works for type I and type II audio and video tapes and for disks. The following media (in alphabetical order) can be cleared by Erase-O-Matic::

Erase-O-Matic 3!

The Erase-O-Matic 3 is a new 6700 gauss degausser designed to work for the larger DLT and other type III tapes and various internal and external hard drives.

6700 Gauss!

Check this out -- we went to a local big-name electronics store and bought two new hard drives -- an Iomega Prestige 1.5 terabyte (yes, terabyte, which is 1500 GB) external hard drive, and a Seagate Barracuda 1.5 TB (1500 GB) internal hard drive:

Iomega Prestige Desktop (1.5 TB or 1500 GB)

Seagate Barracuda Internal (1.5 TB or 1500 GB)

We hooked these drives up, copied data to them, verified that the data was there and accessible, and then ran them through Erase-O-Matic 3.

Guess what happened?

We hooked these drives back up, and the computer couldn't find them! They were completely inaccessible!

Not only will Erase-O-Matic 3 (EOM 3) clear these hard drives, but every type of media listed earlier!

This baby is the monster degausser that You have been looking for. Like Erase-O-Matic 1 (EOM 1), it;

  • Uses NO electricity;

  • Is silent, portable, and needs no cooling time

  • Has NO switches, controls, adjustments, or moving parts;

  • Needs NO maintenance;

  • Needs NO special operating, handling, or processing skills

As you analyze this entire comparison chart, You will see how Erase-O-Matic models 1 and 3 stack up against some of the best-selling degaussers on the market...

Due to the heavier weight of the magnets and tubular steel of Erase-O-Matic 3, we make it out of hardwood -- not only is it a tougher case, but it is an attractive desk accessory as well, as is Erase-O-Matic 1. No need to try hiding these units when not in use!

The two versions of Erase-O-Matic are made similarly and work on the same principles -- destruction of magnetic media data through exposure to powerful magnetic fields. They work like no other eraser/degausser before them.

In the chart below, you can easily see the size and specifications of both Erase-O-Matic 1 and Erase-O-Matic 3 . . .

Note: Neither of these units should pose a health hazard when in normal use. Indications are that it will take over 10 gauss of magnetic energy to cause any interference to a pacemaker. Therefore, since the magnetic leakage of the EOM 1 (0-5 Gauss) is lower, its use should cause no problems. To avoid any potential problems with the EOM 3 (34-126 Gauss), the user of a pacemaker should not bring the unit closer than 6-12" to the pacemake. As refrigerator magnets are 50-500 gauss and MP3 headphones could be up to 200 gauss, these items potentially pose a greater risk to pacemaker users than either of these products. Also, since the lowest coercivity media is rated at about 300, such media exposure to the maximum leakage of the EOM 3 (126 Gauss) should pose no danger to good media in proximity to it -- certainly unless lying directly on top, or underneath, the unit. The chart above shows the gauss leakage at 0, 3, 6, and 12 inches respectively from different locations on the units. Potential Customers concerned with pacemaker risks with these units are encouraged to review the information on some of the websites returned from a Google search on the term "pacemaker gauss risks". Based upon data from some of those sites, pacemaker users should not be at any risk with the EOM 1, and little to no risk from the EOM 3 unless the bottom of the unit is placed within 6 inches of a person's pacemaker.

Speaking of "when not in use", what if something made of metal gets too close to the opening and gets pulled in? NO worries! Both models of Erase-O-Matic also have a "protection block" that fills the media pathway while the unit is not in use -- NOTHING gets in!

But what about Model 2, You may ask? Well, before we consider that, I want to ask You a question about Your degaussing needs...

Will Erase-O-Matic 1 handle the media that You need to clear?

Erase-O-Matic 3 (EOM 3): This version of the Erase-O-Matic magnetic media eraser/degausser was developed and designed to provide the business community an effective and affordable degausser which would degauss media for which the EOM 1 was not designed. Such media included any tape not exceeding 5" wide or 1.37" thick, and most internal, and particularly external, hard drives within the same dimensions. The 6700 gauss rating of the component is strong enough to destroy all data on any tape or PC diskette media and most hard drives when properly (see note 3 below) passed through the 5" x 1.37" media pathway.

The EOM 3 is fully effective on all the media listed for EOM 1 above plus additional popular media types such as: 3480, 3490, 3590, 9840, 9940, DLT, LTO, SDLT, and most hard drives.

EOM 3: The following total list of tapes (in alphabetical order), PLUS ALL THE TAPES LISTED ABOVE FOR EOM 1, can be cleared by the EOM 3 degausser: 3480, 3490, 3490-E, 3590, 3590-E, 3590-H, 3592, 9840, 9940, D-2 (S), D-3 (M), D-5 (M), D-5 (S), D-6 (S), DC100, DLT, DLT III, DLT IIIXT, DLT IV, DLT S4, DLT VS1, DST (S), LTO-ULTRIUM1, LTO-ULTRIUM2, LTO-ULTRIUM3, LTO-ULTRIUM4, SDLT I, SDLT ii, T-10000, TK50, TK70, UMATIC (SP).

Common Notes Pertaining to Both EOM 1 and EOM 3 Degaussers

NOTE 1: The following tapes (in alphabetical order) , because of their large size, cannot be cleared by either the EOM 1 or EOM 3: 9 track, BETACAM (Dig)(L), BETACAM (SP)(L), BETACAM SX (L), D-1 (1" x 14" Dia), D-2 (L), D-2 (M), D-3 (L), D-5 (L), D-6 (L), D-6 (M), DASV ADAT, Disk 8" floppy, DTF-2 (200,730), HDCAM (L), MPEG IMX (L), U-MATIC (large).

NOTE 2: The following tapes (in alphabetical order) , will be unusable after they are degaussed because their prerecorded servo data control tracks will also be destroyed: 3570, 3570-B, 3570-C, 3570-C/XL, ADR30, ADR50, ADR120, AIT-1(S), AIT-5, DISK ZIP 100MB, DISK ZIP 250 MB, SLR, TR-4, TR-5, TR-7, 3590, 3590-E, 3590-H, 3592, LTO-1, LTO-2, LTO-3, LTO-4, 9840, 9940, T-10000.

NOTE 3: The proper (most effective) way to pass media through the media pathway is: All tapes should be passed once then rotated 180 degrees and passed again. A hard drive (end A first) should be passed once, rotated 180 degrees and passed again, then (with end B first) pass it again , rotate 180 degrees and pass again. These multiple passes will ensure that all portions of the media will receive maximum exposure to the powerful magnets within the media pathway.

When checking out, carefully select the proper domestic/international order checkout option to assure addition of the proper shipping and handling charges. Shipment transit time is normally 2 to 7 days for domestic and 5 to 15 days for international, depending upon the destination distance from the Alabama shipping site.
